Innovative 360 HP, 32-MPG Infiniti Powerplant is Only Hybrid on 2012 List –

There are hybrids and then there are hybrids. The sole hybrid powerplant to be honored by WardsAuto.com and WardsAuto World magazine in their 2012 “10 Best Engines” list happens to be the one that challenges conventional wisdom about the compatibility of performance and fuel economy – the 2012 Infiniti M Hybrid’s innovative 3.5-liter V6 with Infiniti Direct Response Hybrid system.

Offering 360 horsepower and 32 miles per gallon highway fuel economy, the Infiniti M Hybrid system utilizes an advanced 1-motor, 2-clutch parallel hybrid design and high-speed motor control technology to enable seamless transitions between the combustion engine and electric motor.

“The Infiniti M hybrid is pure exhilaration in a world of uninspired hybrids, delivering the power of a luxury V8 engine with the fuel economy of a 4-cylinder,” said Infiniti Americas Vice President Ben Poore. “Able to accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in under 6.0 seconds, and capable of driving at speeds of 62 miles per hour in pure electric mode, it’s the one hybrid worthy of the Infiniti name – and, apparently, Ward’s recognition.”

The WardsAuto editors called out the design of the Infiniti Direct Response Hybrid system for its combination of “a single 50-kW (67 hp) electric motor linked to a powerful lithium-ion battery pack.” The editors also noted “the M35h trumps German luxury hybrid sedans that cost much more.”

To be eligible for the “10 Best Engines” award, each engine must be available in a regular-production U.S.-specific model on sale no later than first-quarter 2012, in a vehicle with a base price below $55,000.

European buyers of the Infiniti FX may also be one of 10 lucky winners who will tour Red Bull's racing factory in Milton Keynes, UK. The offer is in honor of Sebastian Vettel's Formula One Championship win. The lucky winners will get a chance to tour with a member of Red Bull's racing team in January just as the drivers are preparing for the new season. Each winner will get to take a home a real piece of a Red Bull Racing car to put on their mantles.

Infiniti is remaining tight-lipped about the chances of its Etherea hatchback concept entering production. There are three possible designs that Infiniti could choose from for the hatchback. The project has seen Mercedes-Benz and Infiniti grow closer as the two manufacturers are working together on the architecture. Look for a more defined hatchback at next year's Geneva Show.

Infiniti will be adding to its already abundant luxury vehicle selection. The automaker is looking to add a three-row crossover and a smaller-than-the-G25/G37 to its lineup. The crossover has already been shown a few months ago; it is called the JX. The JX will be a more family-oriented SUV whereas the already popular QX is used more for its towing capabilities. The newest crossover will attempt to compete with Lexus' RX and Acura's MDX. The smaller car will be Infiniti's first entry-luxury vehicle since the G20 in 2002.

Infiniti is looking to build a high-class version of Nissan's LEAF by 2014. The car is projected to have the capability of charging wirelessly by using 'inductive' technology. Drivers would have a mat that can be placed under the car that would make the automobile absorb the energy; it would have about an 80-90% efficiency compared to a plug.

Mercedes-Benz and Infiniti are teaming up on a new compact hatchback. The two companies will share their technologies to compete with BMW and Audi. The compact is believed to be based on Mercedes-Benz's A-Class platform. For now, the project is in its early stages, but expect more news on this one-of-a-kind luxury compact.
